Tim and Shelley Douglass have devoted their lives to nonviolent resistance to nuclear weapons. They eventually broadened their activism to become involved in the movement to abolish the death penalty, as they came to see the parallels that exist between the inhumanity of war and the inhumanity of the state executing its citizens. Shelley began a pen pal relationship with Leroy White, a man on Alabama's death row, which developed into a friendship. Soon Shelley began to visit Leroy, joined by her husband and the couple became good friends with Leroy White.  When Leroy asked Jim and Shelley to witness his execution they agreed, as they wanted to make sure that he would have friendly faces to look at during his execution.
